Parent/Guardian frequently asked questions

What is “Football Camp”?

Answer: Football Camp allows the Mustangs coaching staff and special coaching guest to work with the players in an effort to improve their football skills. This is also a time designed for the Mustangs coaches and staff in determining the best position, or positions, a player may be suited for, working with players on items such as the rules of the game, to observing a players technique and knowledge for single or multiple positions. An additional benefit, it also allows players and their parents/guardians to observe the coaching staff interacting with their player.

Why no “Try Outs”?

Answer: During the “try outs” period in some leagues, players are measured against one another on existing skill, stamina and game knowledge. Based upon the coach's and team’s individual playing standards, a player may be “cut” or unable to make the team. The Mustangs coaching staff  believe that if a player wants to play, they should have the opportunity to do so.

What if this is my player's first time on an organized youth team, what impact will this have?

Answer: The Mustangs coaching staff welcomes players, regardless of their skill level or game knowledge. One primary goal of the Mustangs staff is to work with players in an effort to develop and sharpen their skills as players. The Mustangs believe that players who are willing to learn, try hard, and show “Heart and Determination” are always an asset to a team.

What if my player is not the best skilled or knowledgeable athlete, will they get playing time?

Answer: First and foremost, all team members will play and support their teammates on and off the field. All players will participate in each game to meet or exceed the minimum play requirements. A player cannot improve without practice and game playing time.

Why the emphasis on grades?

Answer: The Mustangs believe that academics is the key to success for all players. All players must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 (C level) and provide a copy of their most recent grade card for documentation. Players must also achieve and maintain a good standing in their school, community and home while showing respect to their parents/guardians, school officials and the Mustangs coaching staff. The Mustangs staff is always willing to assist parents/guardians with their player in meeting expectations in school, at home, and on or off the playing field.

What about the potential for injury to my player?

Answer: The well-being of young players is promoted through finely detailed safety practices and age/weight standards. Over the years, youth football leagues have adjusted the rules of the game to reduce the risk of injuries.

The fact that most injuries are predictable, and thus preventable, should make the issue of injury non-problematic. However, the most significant problems involving injury arise when players do not notify coaches or adults that they have been injured. Re-injury is also a common problem when both players and coaches do not allow proper time for injuries to heal. These problems are easily avoidable through instructing players to report injuries and afterwords insisting on the resolution of injuries before a return to participation. While no physical activity will ever be totally free of injury, youth football programs are continually working to improve themselves and ensure that more kids each year benefit from the sport's many lessons.
